About Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a learning disability revolving around acquiring and using written and spoken language. These disabilities manifest themselves in a number of symptoms. While the symptoms of Dyslexia may be apparent, a true and correct diagnosis can only be obtained through formal and proper testing.
Dyslexia has many levels of severity and in some cases it can qualify a student for special education programs. In many cases Dyslexia can make success difficult to achieve in a typical educational environment. That said, with appropriate teaching methods, a Dyslexic student can become successful and future problems stemming from Dyslexia can be avoided.
Causes of Dyslexia
The causes of Dyslexia are not known. Imagery studies of the brain have revealed differences in the development and function of Dyslexics. These differences can cause difficulty differentiating separate speech sounds in words and how to represent those sounds. This difficulty is the root of the reading disability Dyslexics tend to incur.
Dyslexic people are not less intelligent
It would be easy to dismiss a student who is slow to pick up language as “dumb”. Many grade school students who have Dyslexia may suffer from low self-confidence and low self esteem that continues into adulthood. The fact is that your Dyslexic child has some very distinguished company.
Ansel Adams, Leonardo DaVinci, Albert Einstein, George Washington, John Lennon, General George S. Patton, Nolan Ryan, Henry Ford and Agatha Christie are all Dyslexics!
Dyslexia Symptoms
The classic symptom of Dyslexia is reading and writing letters in the wrong order. While this is the case with some sufferers, Dyslexia symptoms typically involve other problems with acquiring and using language.
Tutor Services
Tutors provide professional one on one tutoring usually in their home. They will probably have a room dedicated to tutoring students, meaning tutoring sessions will be distraction free. If they have experience as a classroom teacher it enables them to maintain a fun and structured learning environment.
